This is a tough die marriage which is rarely seen at all with a survival estimate of 25 to 30 pieces in all. This one is absolutely fantastic, with near gem quality surfaces, booming visual appeal and a bold strike. Examination confirms the quality and well preserved nature of this rarity. The usual and only seen obverse die of 1803 continues in service, with a new reverse die with the upright of the E of STATES placed between two clouds. The reverse die shows various thin cracks and evidence of clashing down around the shield, which likely accounts for its abrupt ending from a short life span for this die. It is likely that the present coin is the finest example of this die pair to survive.
