Cert # 1625918-001

Coin Number 48

Here is undoubtedly the finest known 1844 Liberty Head or Coronet eagle. It is the finest certified by both NGC and PCGS. Noted expert John Dannreuther notes that he believes it is the best one around and would top any others he has seen. The fields are prooflike, with minimal signs of handling, and is considered a solid MS-63. This is one of the lowest mintage dates from Philadelphia of this era, only 6,361 were struck and from that meager beginning perhaps 55 exist today. Mint State examples are known, but just a couple of low end MS-61s. The majority of those that do survive are in the VF to EF grade range. This coin is simply phenomenal and must be seen to be believed. All known 1844 eagles were struck with a die that shows die file marks below star one and more at star three. Well balanced in color and surfaces, with a touch of copper gold toning and deep original frost on Liberty’s face and neck. A simply splendid example of this elusive and sought after date.
