Cert # 2091835-005

Coin Number 54

This is the only certified “Prooflike” example of this date and reported to be one of only three coins known that are considered to be Mint State of this date and mint. It is believed that just over 200 are known in all grades. This one shows the usual heavy die lapping on the obverse with details shallow, notably on the upper stars and cords around her hair bun. On the reverse the mintmark is placed well to the right, passed the N of TEN. There are four die varieties known, and most show some degree of date repunching. Here the fields are reflective with die polish evident, while the devices are boldly frosted and this produces a cameo effect which is otherwise unheard of on an 1846-O eagle. An extraordinary coin that can be traced back to the Harry Bass, Jr., Collection.
