Cert # 654330-003

Coin Number 82

This is the only Proof known of this date, and what a gem! The Cameo contrast is strong here, with perfectly smooth mirror fields upon which the heavily frosted devices seem to float above. The strike is precise and full, with no hints of softness anywhere to be found. Of course the surfaces are majestic, as one would expect from the gem grade. The Philadelphia Mint went ahead and struck circulation strikes as well from this obverse die after this singular proof coin was struck. This fact has been determined by noted author John Dannreuther, who extensively researched all proof gold coins struck at our mints. No other rumors or hints of another proof example of 1857 eagle exists. A simply phenomenal coin.
