Coin Number 101

Wow, this is far and away the finest known of this date and mint, and an important Civil War era date it is. Only 10,960 pieces were struck and from that emission perhaps 100 or so exist today. Out of the depths of the ocean came this sparkling near gem example from the S.S. Republic shipwreck. It is the sole finest example yet seen from any source. Glittering frost bathes the devices, while the fields show partial reflectivity. No signs of toning are present. Rather heavy planchet field striations, these from the normal planchet making process at the mint, but seldom seen as so few coins are this well preserved today to allow their appearance. An elegant example of this Civil War era rarity.
