This is one of the really tough dates to find at all, and here is the finest known! The total mintage of 3,530 pieces was reduced by time and attrition to approximately 40 to 45 pieces today. This one escaped general notice by residing on the ocean floor for generations until it was carefully recovered from the S.S. Republic shipwreck. Today it stands tall as the only Choice mint state 1864 eagle known. Liberty’s face and neck are boldly frosted and the surrounding fields show minor signs of handling, common to this era on the soft gold surfaces. Needless to say this is yet another incredible, irreplaceable highlight of the Tyrant Collection that is beyond the measure of all but the greatest collection formed.
