Here is the final appearance of the No Motto eagles. San Francisco, eager to start production in 1866, went ahead once the new obverse dated dies arrived and struck off 8,500 pieces in February 1866. Soon, the new reverse die with the Motto arrived, and coinage continued with the new reverse style. This minor jumping of the coinage gun in 1866 created one of the rarest major varieties of the entire eagle series. While not quite as rare as the 1864-S, the 1866-S without Motto is quite elusive. It is estimated that about 40 exist in all grades. This is one is the very finest seen, offering a solid strike, lustrous fields and extraordinary quality.
