Coin Number 297

As the Civil War finally was brought to a nasty close in early 1865, the economy and normal life was still a long way off. This 1866 half dollar was struck about a year later, with its satiny white luster and bold strike. Today it has acquired a touch of delicate golden-tan, some on the high points, other areas in the fields. Exceptional quality too, with no marks to speak of from handling. This is the first year that the Motto IN GOD WE TRUST was adopted, and this appears above the eagle on a raised ribbon.
