Coin Number 133

Here is another very, very near gem Proof with the most desirable deep cameo contrast. A total of 30 were struck on February 3, 1872. Today there are 10 to 12 known, and this is one of the finer examples. At least 3 of these are impounded in museums, two at the Smithsonian and another at the ANS. The surfaces here offer exceptional eye appeal, with classic orange peel texture in the perfectly mirrored fields and are surrounded by the deep snowy frost upon the devices. Considerable die polish lines are present, as usually seen on these tiny mintage, overly polished dies used for the Proofs. A magnificent example of this rare early Proof eagle.
