Coin Number 137

A glorious boldly contrasted gem Proof! Only 25 were struck in Proof on February 18, 1873. Today perhaps 10 to 12 are known. At least two are impounded in museums. Notice the closed 3 feature here, it soon came to the attention of the those in charge of the Mint that the Closed 3, would simply not do. It looked like an 8! Hence by the end of February new dies were created with a more open 3 style, and most of the coins struck with the Closed 3 style are rare and desirable today.
