Cert # 448233-014
Coin Number 164
Another rare and desirable proof issue with a total mintage of 30 pieces (20 on January 25, and 10 more on November 22, 1879). Today it is believed that 12 to 14 exist. Most of those show the Cameo contrast, but this is one of the full gems noted in John Dannreuther’s recent census. The eye appeal is epic, with boldly mirrored fields surrounded by the frosty devices. No deep or detracting hairlines are present, and the surfaces are mint fresh, original, and attractive. The old reverse die from 1866 for proof coinage continues on through 1880, and is seen again on this elegant 1879 gem Proof eagle.
