Coin Number 167
Here is one of the most famous New Orleans Mint rarities. A slow year produced only 1,500 coins in 1879 for these New Orleans gold eagles, and most hit circulation and served their intended purpose. Hence, they are covered in circulation marks, and this issue is notorious for the lackluster eye appeal of the surviving pieces, which number around 70 today. Somehow this coin came down to us in wonderful condition, untouched by varying improvements over the generations, retaining its frosty copper gold toning over luster, and the surfaces, well they are incredible for this date and mint. A review of the photographs of the top known examples will confirm how head and shoulders the present coin is in terms of quality and appeal, over any other known example. Simply stunning!
