This year has a Proof mintage of 36 pieces, struck on 8 different days through the year, clearly being made to order. Today there are just 10 to 12 known and this is one of the finer ones with a fantastic pedigree from the famed Garrett Collection. The eye appeal is stupendous, with deep frost on Liberty, majestic smooth fields and devices, and glorious ancient antique color. Two or more are impounded from the meager survival group, so any example of this date in Proof is a major rarity. The reverse die continues in service for Proofs only from 1866, and seen here with more die polish than ever, and this is the last appearance of this long lasting reverse proof-only die, apparently retired after 14 years of limited, but hard service.
