With a mintage of 13,000 eagles in 1893, the Carson City Mint issued some nice quality coins. However, none seen today exceed the MS-62 grade, where perhaps 5 to 10 are known this nice. This one has good color, a nice typical strike and attractive surfaces. The Carson City Mint was closed at the end of the year by President Grover Cleveland (as he did temporarily when elected in 1886) as he felt it was redundant with the San Francisco Mint relatively close by. Hence this is the last year of Carson City coin production.
