Republic of San Marco, Revolution of 1848 1848-1849
Fr-1518, PCGS-graded MS-61
Obverse depicts a lion on a pedestal. Reverse has the value within a wreath and date below. Gorgeous gold color and bold details on this very scarce coin.
The ill-fated Revolution of 1848 was led by a Liberal movement attempting to overthrow the harsh rule of the Austrian Empire. Pope Pius IX, originally supported the Revolution, then later changed his mind, stating that he could not support a war between two Catholic countries. Venice would have to wait thirteen more years.
