Beornwulf, King of Mercia 823-825 AD

East Anglia mint. Moneyer’s name Werbald in 3 lines. Bare-headed portrait facing right. Extremely rare.

One of the finest preserved coins of this early king, each side boldly struck and outlined in full beaded rims, made from good metal, with exceptionally choice surfaces showing magnificent ancient grayish gold patina. A splendid Saxon penny!
