Clement XIII, Pope 1758-1769

Muntoni 3; Berman 2890, PCGS graded MS-65+

Rome. CLEMENS XIII PONT M AN I, Papal arms. Reverse: SVPRA FIRMAM PE-TRAM 1758, the Church seated facing on cloud, holding keys and temple.

The reverse type of this coin is remarkable in that it does not depict St. Peter or any other person from the Bible or Church tradition, but instead a female allegorical figure representing Holy Mother Church coming on the clouds and holding both the keys of St. Peter and a model of St. Peter’s Basilica.
