Rudolf II, King of Italy 922-926 (922-924 with Berengar I)

Grierson/Blackburn 1021, PCGS-graded AU-58

Struck at Milan; a beautiful and unusually choice example of this rarity.

Encouraged to invade Italy by powerful aristocrats who opposed the emperor Berengar, Rudolf was crowned king of the Lombards at Pavia. In 923, he defeated Berengar at the Battle of Firenzuola, and the following year Berengar was murdered. Rudolf then ruled Upper Burgundy (Provence) and Italy together, residing alternately in both kingdoms and united them. This rare coin was issued early in the reign, with Berengar.
