Charlemagne, King of Italy 774-814
MG 233var, PCGS-graded MS-63
Struck at Milan; a spectacular specimen!
King of the Franks and Lombards, and Holy Roman Emperor as of 1800, this famous tyrant founded the Carolingian Empire, uniting much of western and central Europe–the first ruler to do so since the fall of the Roman Empire. All Holy Roman Emperors considered their kingdoms to be descendants of Charlemagne’s empire.
