Francesco Dandolo, Doge of Venice 1328-1339

Fr-1219, Paolucci 1, PCGS-graded MS-64

Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Sharply struck from somewhat worn dies, well centered and with delightful gold toning.

Francesco Dandolo was a successful diplomat who earlier was the Venetian ambassador to two Popes then residing in Avignon. As Doge, he was embroiled in wars with the Turks and Verona which occupied most of his time and efforts.
