Andrea Dandolo, Doge of Venice 1343-1354

Fr-1221, PCGS-graded Uncirculated Details

Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Almost fully struck with resulting wonderful details though struck from worn dies.

Andrea Dandalo was a trained law professor. As Doge, he established a new Venetian legal code, and was a strong patron of the arts. He would have done more, but a disastrous earthquake, a serious outbreak of the Black Death, and a war with the Magyars, sapped the strength of the Republic.
