Marin Falier, Doge of Venice 1354-1355

Fr-1222, PCGS-graded MS-64

Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Very rare, on an unusually shaped flan but with excellent centering and detail.

In this brief reign, Marino Faliero, as he was also known, was a military commander elected as Doge to combat the Genoese, but once in power he tried to overthrow the state, for which he was executed by beheading.
