Giovanni Dolfin, Doge of Venice 1356-1361

Fr-1224, PCGS-graded MS-63

Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Boldly struck on a flan more typical of most ducats, difficult to find so pleasing.

Venice suffered greatly during this Doge’s rule. Dalmatia, Zara, and Split were lost by Venice from the Treaty of Zadar in 1358. Additionally, trade was now forbidden with Egypt.
