Nicolo Marcello, Doge of Venice 1473-1474
Fr-1236, M.175, PCGS-graded MS-63
Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Somewhat off center and lacking details but still a fine example of this rarity.
Marcello, the 69th doge of Venice, who held office for a short period, from 13 August 1473 to 1 December 1474, had been a successful trader in the Orient who devoted himself to reorganizing Venice’s state finances. He introduced a new silver coin named after him.
