Giovanni Mocenigo, Doge of Venice 1478-1485
Fr-1239, PCGS-graded MS-63
Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Lustrous and sharp, with a wonderful face of Christ.
Venice’s days as a dominant sea power were pretty much over. The Republic was now spending its time fighting wars. Two during Mocenigo’s tenure, against Mehmed II and the Turks, and against Ercole I d’Este of Ferrara.
