Augustino Barbarigo, Doge of Venice 1486-1501
Fr-1241, PCGS-graded MS-65
Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Slightly off center but bold and choice.
By this point, Venice’s dominance was only a distant memory. Some success against the French and king Charles VIII, but stinging defeats against the Ottoman Turks costing Lepanto and indirectly Zara.
