Nicknamed Alfonso the Magnanimous, as king of Naples he was one of the most famous men of his day. Humanist scholars who knew him praised Alfonso for his humanist education, his love of books and fine art, his passions for hunting, dancing and tournaments, and for his generosity and sincere religious faith. Many called him a brilliant Renaissance prince.
