Barbarossa was the Italian name of the German king Frederick I, who was also the Holy Roman Emperor from 2 January 1155 until his death. He was one of the greatest medieval emperors, remembered for his longevity, ambition, administrative skills, political shrewdness, and cunning in battle. His cultural contributions were numerous, including the re-establishment of the Corpus Juris Civilis, or the Roman rule of law.
