Enrico Dandolo, Doge of Venice 1192-1205

Paolucci 1; Biaggi 2761, PCGS-graded About Uncirculated Details

Obverse depicts the Doge and St. Mark standing facing, holding a banner between them. On the reverse Christ enthroned. Excellent centering and evenness of detail with colorful patina.

Enrico Dandolo was quite a remarkable man. He became Doge at age 85, and still ruled thirteen more years. He partook in the fourth Crusade, and was at the forefront of the siege and conquest of Constantinople. He improved the Venetian coinage and was responsible for the mintage of the new and more detailed Grosso, offered here.
