Pietro Ziani, Doge of Venice 1205-1229

Pa. 1, PCGS-graded AU-53

Obverse depicts the Doge and St. Mark standing facing, holding a banner between them. On the reverse Christ enthroned. Excellent centering and evenly detailed with dark gray patina.

Pietro Ziani helped consolidate the acquisitions of the previous Doge, Enrico Dandolo. The ties to the Byzantine Empire became closer, with Crete, Corfu, and Epirus falling under Venetian influence.
