Jacopo Tiepolo, Doge of Venice 1229-1249

M.24, PCGS-graded MS-63

Obverse depicts the Doge and St. Mark standing facing, holding a banner between them. On the reverse Christ enthroned. Perfectly centered and showing extraordinary detail with light patina.

Tiepolo’s election to doge of Venice began a feud between his family and the Dandolos, an old aristocratic family. His control of the island included the historic passage of the Statutum Novum, an important codifying of Venetian civil law, and the construction of two basilicas.
