Ranieri Zeno, Doge of Venice 1253-1268
Gamberini 32, PCGS-graded AU-55
Obverse depicts the Doge and St. Mark standing facing, holding a banner between them. On the reverse Christ enthroned. “Flat noses” but still the facing portraits are sharp and the design is centered.
Most of the period of this Doge’s rule was spent at war with rival sea power Genoa. In 1261 the Genoese conquered Constantinople, and in 1263, the Venetians defeated the Genoese fleet. Little was actually accomplished.
