Lorenzo Tiepolo, Doge of Venice 1268-1275
M.33, PCGS-graded AU-55
Obverse depicts the Doge and St. Mark standing facing, holding a banner between them. On the reverse Christ enthroned. Excellent centering and details, ancient deposits on the patina of this 800-year old coin.
Most of Tiepolo’s reign was spent fighting a league of northern Italian cities. Cities such as Mantua, Bologna, Treviso, and Ferrara were eventually subdued by Venice, confirming Venice’s predominance in the Adriatic.
