James I, Stuart King 1603-1625

London. Third coinage of 1619-1625. Fourth bust. Lis mintmark. Laureate portrait facing left in armor, value XX (20 shillings) behind bust; reverse, long cross fleury over crowned square shield.

An unusually fine example of this style, struck on a broad flan allowing for complete legends, which are sharp, the king’s image far more detailed than is normally seen, his shield complete with small areas of soft strike, just a little wear and still lustrous.
