Philip III of Spain, Duke of Milan 1598-1621
Fr-720; Crippa 1/C, PCGS-graded AU-53
A choice example of this rarity with a classic Renaissance portrait.
Known in Spain as Philip the Pious, as the Duke of Milan he was a dismal ruler who watched his native Spain decline economically. Aside from the Thirty Years War, Philip kept his kingdoms out of war but is remembered as a dim-witted monarch who preferred hunting and traveling to governing. Italians did their best to ignore him.
