Rene the Good, King of Naples 1435-1442

Cru.V.S. 927.3, PCGS-graded MS-62

Obverse depicts crowned bust of king facing. The reverse has crowned arms. Softly struck on an imperfect flan; small gold coins made by the hammer were difficult to produce.

Rene, or Reiner actually ruled Naples for only a few years, (1438-1442). However, he never accepted the fact that Naples was conquered by Alfonso V of Aragon in 1442. So, Reiner kept the title of king of Naples on his coins until his death in 1480. The coin pictured here was minted in Barcelona well after 1442, and contains in the legend, king of Naples.
