James I of Aragon, King of Sicily 1285-1296
Fr-655, Spahr 1, PCGS-graded MS-63
Very rare; unusually choice and sharp with excellent centering.
Called “the Just,” James was King of Aragon and Valencia, Count of Barcelona from 1291 to 1327, and King of Sicily from 1285 to 1295. He was the son of a Spanish father (Peter III of Aragon) and a Sicilian mother (Constance of Sicily) who simply inherited his titles. The style of this coin suggests an influence by previous Arabic issues.
