Vahram (Bahram IV), Sasanian King AD 388-399
Sunrise # 882 (this coin), SNS Type Ia1/1a, Gobl Type I/2, Nearly Mint State
Mint: AS. There are two interpretations for the abbreviation of AS. 1- ASuristan- region currently stretching from Baghdad to the port of Basra in Persian Gulf. 2- ASpahan (present day Isfahan in Central Iran).
A superb example of Bahram IV silver drachm showing the details of the crown, the royal shirt and insignia. The reverse shows the traditional fire altar with two attendants. On the altar’s column the phrase “Raasty” in Pahlavi meaning “truth” is noted. This phrase began to be used on the reverse of the Sasanian coins starting with Shapur II.
