Florence
Alessandro de’ Medici, Duke of Florence 1532-1537
MIR 97; Fr-280, PCGS-graded AU-58
Obverse depicts crowned coat of arms. On the reverse an ornate cross with four heads of cherub’s in angles. Evenly detailed with good legends and pleasing gold color.
In 1527, the Florentine citizenry re-established the Florentine republic. This lasted only three years, as Pope Clement VII, with support from imperial troops, conquered Florence, ended the republic, and installed nineteen year old Duke Alessandro as Duke of Florence. The actual installation of Alessandro was made by the emperor, as Florence lay outside the Papal territory.
