Mu’izz al-Din Muhammad, Seljuq Sultan fl. AD 1138-1139
Jafar S.MS.553B (same dies); A 1691H, Very Fine
Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad) mint, citing the ‘Abbasid caliph al-Muqtafi and the Great Seljuq Sanjar as overlord. Similar to coins of Mas’ud issued at Madinat al-Salam in the same year but with the name Muhammad relpacing Mas’ud. There is no mention of a ‘Muhammad’ in the chronicles who might have replaced Mas’ud. It is possible that he was the late Mahmud’s son who may have been briefly recognized by the caliph al-Muqtafi for unknown political reasons. Extremely rare.
