Odovacer in the name of Zeno, Ostrogothic King of Italy 476-493
Lacam 53, 56, Extremely Fine
Obverse depicts a helmet and diademed bust. On the reverse shows Victory standing to the left, holding a long cross. Struck at Milan; excellent centering on this early issue.
Odoacer, or Odovacar, was the first king of Italy. He officially deposed Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman Emperor in 476. This effectively ended the long history of the dominance of Rome. Odoacer was invited to a banquet hosted by Theodoric in 493. This was a purported banquet of reconciliation, but Odoacer was executed in Ravenna. So much for diplomatic niceties.
