Ratchis, 1st reign, Lombardic Kings of Northern Italy 744-749

Cf. Bernareggi 138 (for type), PCGS-graded MS-61

Obverse depicts a facing bust, wearing hair in semi-circles around crown of head, mustache, and long beard; four pellets in cruciform shape on forehead above bridge of nose. On the reverse, St. Michael the Arch Angel, helmeted and in military attire, standing left, holding cross-tipped staff in right hand and round ornamented shield in left. An extraordinary example of this rarity.

After unsuccessfully setting siege to Perugia, Ratchis abdicated power temporarily and became a monk.
