Francesco Dona, Doge of Venice 1545-1553
Fr-1250, PCGS-graded MS-64
Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Lustrous and well centered, with excellent rims.
Francesco Dona, or Donato, was not overly interested in military affairs. A very religious man, he tried to govern wisely, but not make any major changes or initiatives to the status quo. Dona concentrated on embellishing the city artistically, and enlisted the help of the renowned architect, Sansovino. To accomplish this end.
