Marino Grimani, Doge of Venice 1595-1605

Fr-1274, PCGS-graded MS-63

Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. Excellent centering and detail despite being struck from worn dies.

Marco Grimani, somewhat anti-Papal, passed laws in Venice limiting the power of the Papacy, and went so far as to divest priests of their clerical immunity, and charge them as common criminals when deemed appropriate.
