Silvestro Valier, Doge of Venice 1694-1700

Obverse depicts St. Mark standing right presenting banner to kneeling Doge. On the reverse Christ standing facing within stars, holding the gospel and raising hand in benediction. A choice coin with a central die-break on reverse.

Venice’s continued war with the Turks, known as the Morean War, exhausted the city economically, and militarily. Despite that, Doge Silvestro Valier, continued to host extravagant parties, which damaged the city state even more.
